It takes guts to become a contractor and you’ve all got an element of entrepreneurial spirit. Our blog recently featured an article with steps to becoming an entrepreneur, and following on from this we’ve reached out to successful entrepreneurs asking them to share their top tips and this is what they said:

“Stop. Breathe. Take a moment to focus on what you really want, and what you’ll do in the real world to get you there.” The Boardroom [@theboardroomuk]

“Create something with a purpose. Without purpose there is no passion and without passion a business cannot reach its ultimate potential.” ChangeBound [@ChangeBound]

Organizers Direct [@OrgDirect] has a number of great tips:

“Don’t be so scared of rejection and failure that you miss the opportunity to take the plunge and make something of your own.”

“When creating goals, be sure to put an action plan in place to efficiently meet them. Set SMART goals – specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound.”

“Learn from your mistakes – remember that failure is nothing more than an opportunity to learn and grow.”

“Never stop networking. Always look for opportunities to connect with new people.”

And let’s not forget some entrepreneurial tips provided by some well known and successful entrepreneurs;

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple

“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company

We LOVE all these tips on entrepreneurship, and we know so many are relevant to the contractors and freelancers we look after. You have a specialist set of skills and a commitment to what you do but you need to make others aware of it. Build those relationships with agencies, end clients and other contractors both face to face and online to keep the work coming.

If you’re fairly new to contracting or haven’t yet made the switch from permanent then download our Guide to Contracting – it’s full of great advice and written with the help of experienced contractors.
